legs sitting on a rockSclerotherapy is effective in treating varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy is typically performed for cosmetic purposes, but can also relieve aching, swelling, night cramping, and burning in the legs.

During the procedure, a solution is directly inserted into the affected vein using a fine needle. The solution will cause the vein to scar and collapse, which forces blood flow to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and ultimately fades.

Complications are rare. Temporary side effects include bruising, small sores, raised red areas, dark lines or spots and multiple tiny red blood vessels. If you receive treatment for small varicose veins or spider veins, expect to see results in 3-6 weeks. If your doctor is treating larger veins, anticipate seeing improvements within 3-4 months. Veins that have been treated typically do not come back, but new ones can form.

A follow-up visit will be scheduled a month after the procedure to assess results and determine if more sessions are necessary to obtain optimal results. Typically, if more sessions are needed, you will need to wait 4-6 weeks before receiving treatment again.
