Q. Do I need to see my primary physician in addition to seeing my cardiologist?

Yes, while we will work closely with your primary physician, it is important to continue seeing your primary physician during your care with us to ensure the quality of your overall health.

Q. What should I do in case of an emergency?

In the event you or a loved one has an emergency, either during or after-hours, please call 9-1-1 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

Q. What can I expect at my first visit?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to your scheduled appointment to complete the necessary patient forms for your visit. In addition, please bring the following to assist us with your care:

  • Driver’s license or photo ID
  • Insurance card
  • Actual bottles of Medications (prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins and supplements)
  • Copy of recent lab/test results

During your initial appointment, we will thoroughly discuss your medical history, family history and any symptoms you may be experiencing. Your cardiologist will perform a thorough physical examination and any necessary diagnostic testing. Your first visit will last up to one hour.

We will work closely with your primary physician and any other specialists to ensure you receive the highest standard of care possible.

Q. When will I get my lab results?

While some of our tests may produce results the same day, others may require up to 48 hours to be processed. We will contact you with the results and our diagnosis as soon as we receive the results back from the lab.

Q. What is an EKG?

An EKG, or electrocardiogram, is a noninvasive test performed to detect potential problems within the heart, such as arrhythmia. The test takes only about 10 minutes, translating the heart’s electrical activity to lines on a paper. Once your cardiologist has thoroughly reviewed the results, we will contact you to discuss the findings and diagnosis.

Q. What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a test performed to capture images of the heart that are in displayed on a monitor for your cardiologist to view in search of any abnormalities. Once the images have been thoroughly reviewed, we will discuss the findings and diagnosis with you at a later date.

Q. What is a cardiac catheterization?

A cardiac catheterization, or heart cath, is necessary to identify any blockages within the coronary arteries or to detect valvular heart disease. While the test is somewhat invasive, it is necessary to provide us with the information needed to provide you with the appropriate treatment.

Depending on the severity of the blockages in the artery, you may have to stay overnight in the hospital or possibly have to have coronary bypass surgery.

Q. What is an angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a procedure that uses either a balloon or another device to clear any blockages in your coronary artery. This procedure is usually followed by the placement of a stent. Generally, the angioplasty procedure takes about one hour.

Depending on the severity of the blockages in the artery, you may be able to return home the same day; however, there is a possibility of having to stay in the hospital for a couple of days.

Q. What is a stent?

A stent is a spring-like, circular device used to prevent a blockage from reoccurring in the coronary artery. Stents are usually placed after the angioplasty procedure in an effort to stabilize the artery walls.

Q. What is a pacemaker?

A pacemaker is a small device used to control abnormal heart rhythms. It is placed either in the chest or abdomen and uses electrical pulses to encourage the heart to beat normally. Pacemakers are often used to help patients manage symptoms associated with arrhythmia.
